Young, others, concerned about ATF ban on AR-15 ammo

239 members of Congress wrote a letter to ATF Director Wednesday, saying proposed ban interferes with Second Amendment rights.

Alaska’s Don Young (R) was among 239 members of the US Congress who sent a letter Wednesday to the Director of the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Bureau expressing concern over an Obama Administration proposal to ban a popular ammunition for AR-15 style rifles.

The M855, or “green tip” round is the second most used ammunition for 5.56 caliber AR-15 rifles in the US.

Certain armor piercing rounds have been banned for 30 years under a federal law to protect law enforcement officers, but the M855 has always been exempted for “sporting” purposes.

The lawmakers say new guidelines proposed by the ATF will effectively ban the ammunition’s manufacture and sale in the US.

In the letter to ATF Director H. Todd Jones, they said the move will “interfere with Second Amendment rights by disrupting the market for ammunition that law abiding Americans use for sporting and other legitimate purposes.”

The ATF is taking public comment on the rule until March 16. (Instructions for providing comment are included on the last page of this document.)
