DILLINGHAM:  A 20-year-old Koliganek man escaped from the Dillingham jail last night, but was re-apprehended not long after.

Jairus Nelson slid out underneath the garage door, according to police, then stripped off his clothes and ran across D Street and hid in the woods, clad only in his underwear.

The police say Nelson jumped into a car in the Bristol Express parking lot (across the street from the police station and jail) and ordered the driver to speed off. Instead, she promptly took her keys and got out of the vehicle.

Nelson's luck ran out with his next attempt at securing a getaway car. He approached another vehicle pulling into the Bristol Express. Behind the wheel was off-duty Dillingham police officer Dan Decker, whose family was in the car with him. Decker held Nelson down until the on-duty officer in pursuit arrived.

Nelson was in jail following an arrest in Koliganek Friday for violating release conditions on original charges of burglary, theft, and assault. For his Sunday night escapades, police have now added a felony charge of escape in the second degree.
