50th anniversary of massive, deadly earthquake later this month.
Governor Sean Parnell signed a resolution Tuesday making March 27, 2014 “Good Friday Earthquake Remembrance Day.”
March 27 will mark the 50th anniversary of the 9.2 magnitude earthquake that rocked the state, collapsing structures, causing landslides, tsunamis and ground fissures, and killing an estimated 139 people.
The earthquake was the largest recorded in North American history, and the second largest ever recorded by seismograph, according to the USGS.
Governor Parnell said that the resolution, which had been sponsored in the House by Rep. Charisse Millet of Anchorage, helps to "remember and honor all of those who helped in the recovery, support, and rebuilding efforts."
