Duo Skis Aniak to Dillingham, Despite Low Snow

Luc Mehl

By ski, skate, and tennis shoe, Luc Mehl and Derek Collins completed a two week, 250 mile trek in March from the YK to Bristol Bay.

For most of us in Western Alaska, this past winter was a disappointment. A lot of hunting, traveling, and outdoor recreation was spoiled by the warm temperatures and poor snow conditions.

But two backcountry ski enthusiasts (which is a mild way of describing these guys) were not to be deterred by the weather in southwest Alaska. They decided that a planned journey from Aniak to Dillingham was a ‘go’, no matter what form of human-powered travel it would take to make it happen.

No snow to ski? No problem. Derek Collins travels the Aniak River on Nordic Skates near the start of a 250 mile, two week trip from Aniak to Dillingham in March 2014.
