Another 1.7 million in the bins helps push the total run to 45 million. If the upper eastside forecast proves true, there still may be a long tail that takes this run well past 50 million for the third year in a row. Boats are crowding into Ugashik and the Kvichak to see this thing through!
Our 2017 Fund Drive is underway. This show, dedicated to this fishery and its fishermen, needs your support! While you're listening to the program online, consider making a contribution under the Donate tab at the top of our website.
Trailers are starting to haul more boats out of the water, especially in Dillingham where the Nushagak feels like its beginning to wind gradually down. In Ugashik, "it looks like a city now," says Stevie K skipper Buck Gibbons. The run went past 45 million Thursday, and the Nushagak is probably setting an all time high harvest record today. If after this predicted three day "lag" (if it can be called that) the rest of the Naknek Kvichak run heads inshore, might this run come in bigger than last year? Tonight, Gibbons chimes in from Ugashik, plus KDLG's Caitlin Tan hops aboard an AGS beach tender in Naknek. We check in with local businesses to see how their season is going, and BBSRI's Michael Link updates on the collaborative effort that helped fund this Bay's core management tools. Make a pledge tonight! Keep this program funded for next year!
Catch this program nightly at 6 p.m., 10 p.m., and 2 a.m. on AM 670, and online at KDLG.org. (With early broadcasts Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.)
