Bristol Bay Driftnet Permit Values Inch Upwards

Celeste Novak

There continues to be some upward pressure on the value of Bristol Bay driftnet fishing permits. The February permit values report from the Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission puts the value of a Bristol Bay driftnet permit at $133.9-thousand dollars. That’s up $900-dollars compared to the value recorded back in January. The value put forward by CFEC does not necessarily represent the price being asked for driftnet permits on the open market. Alaska Boats and Permits in Homer has several Bristol Bay driftnet permits listed for sale with prices ranging from $160-thousand to $185-thousand dollars. The brokerage company Permit Master has 2 Bristol Bay driftnet permits available… one is available for $155-thousand dollars and the other is available for $160-thousand dollars. Dock Street Brokers in Seattle has 6 Bristol Bay driftnet permits listed for sale with asking prices ranging from $155-thousand to $170-thousand dollars. The latest permit values report from CFEC puts the value of a Bristol Bay setnet permit at $36.5-thousand dollars. That’s unchanged from the value recorded in January. Alaska Boats and Permits in Homer has 2 Bristol Bay driftnet permits listed with asking prices of 39-thousand dollars and 45-thousand dollars. Dock Street Brokers in Seattle has several Bristol Bay driftnet permits listed for sale. The asking prices vary quite a bit because some permits come with specific leased sites and equipment. Generally the asking prices range between about $39-thousand to as high as $120-thousand dollars for a package that includes the permit, equipment and some land along the Egegik River. A look at some other salmon fishing permits in Alaska shows quite a bit of stability. The value of Cook Inlet driftnet permits remain unchanged at $82.3-thousand dollars while the value placed on Alaska Peninsula driftnet permits increased by about $4-thousand dollars up to $81.8-thousand dollars. Kodiak area setnet permits dropped in February down to $77.5-thousand dollars. That’s the lowest value recorded in the last 12-months according to the February estimated monthly permit value report from the Alaska Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission.
