Research team counts Kvichak sockeye smolt

Every year, millions of sockeye salmon return to Bristol Bay, headed for spawning grounds in area rivers. Fish and Game counts the returning fish, and now the department is partnering with other researchers to count juvenile salmon a year or two later as they leave some rivers.

For the last few week’s millions of sockeye smolt have been leaving the major lakes in the Bristol Bay region headed for the salt water. They will be back in a couple of years as the adult sockeye that power the Bay’s massive commercial fishery.
