AFN Calls for a Day to Honor Children

The Alaska Federation of Natives is calling for all Alaskans to celebrate Alaska’s kids during a special day next month. AFN has set April 26th as “Honoring Our Children Day” and they are asking all its members to do the same.

The Chairman of the Bush Caucus in the Alaska House of Representatives outlined some legislative achievements and challenges during a speech last week at the annual convention of the Alaska Federation of Natives. KDLG’s Mike Mason listened in and filed this report.

Last week’s Alaska Federation of Natives convention featured speeches from all 3 members of Alaska’s Congressional delegation. Senator Mark Begich used his time to talks about a number of issues including supporting tribal courts and making fixes to the new health care law. AFN Update: Hoffman and Sweeney Elected Co-Chairs

The members of the Alaska Federation of Natives elected 2-new co-chairs during the annual convention that wrapped up Saturday. There were 4 nominees for the co-chair positions, including incumbent Ralf Anderson from Dillingham. The candidate with the most votes in Saturday’s election was Ana Hoffman from Bethel. She’s the President and CEO of the Bethel Native Corporation. Hoffman has a degree in Psychology from Stanford and a Master’s Degree in Rural Development from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. As part of the new staggered terms for AFN co-chairs, Hoffman will serve a 2-year term.

Don Young

The most senior member of Alaska’s congressional delegation addressed the delegates to the Alaska Federation of Natives convention in Fairbanks on Friday. Congressman Don Young’s speech was short and prerecorded. Young stressed the importance of increasing the numbers of game species like moose and caribou in Alaska.

Alaska Governor Sean Parnell used his speech at the annual Alaska Federation of Natives convention to unveil a new initiative to digitally linkup schools across the state. KDLG’s Mike Mason has the story.
