DOT weight restrictions go in effect for area roads Thursday

Beginning Thursday, seasonal weight restrictions go into effect in Dillingham, King Salmon, and Iliamna.

Seasonal weight restrictions for the Central Region go into effect Thursday at 8:00 a.m. All state maintained roads in the Dillingham and King Salmon areas go to 50 percent, and state maintained roads in the Iliamna area go to 75 percent.

(Weight restrictions are stated as a percentage of legal allowable weight and are applied to the maximum axle loading of 17 AAC 25.013(e).)

The restrictions help prevent damage to the roads during constant freezing and thawing. How long they remain in place depends on the weather.

“Every year is different. Its hard to say when it starts and when it stops but typical is middle of March through end of May,” said Todd Vanhove, DOT's manager for the Central Regional maintenance and operations.

The restrictions are mainly for large trucks. Most personal vehicles will not be effected by these restrictions.

Contact the Dept. of Transportation at 907-269-0763 for more information.
