State working on re-opening Dillingham DA’s office

KDLG News

The state is taking first steps toward a locally-based District Attorney - by looking for an office near the courthouse.

The state Department of Law is taking the first steps toward re-instating a local District Attorney in Dillingham.

Dillingham cases have been prosecuted by an Anchorage-based DA for the past several months. The department is now looking for new office space near the courthouse, and then will solicit for a Dillingham-based DA once again.

The state issued a public notice earlier this week looking for new office space for the DA’s office. It wants 700-square-feet of office space within five blocks of the new courthouse off Emperor Way, although it notes that the department will also consider other locations.

The current DA office is in downtown Dillingham, on a month-to-month lease. Department of Law spokeswoman Cori Mills said that location is not ideal now that the courthouse is farther from town, given how often the DA needs to be at the courthouse.

The notice also described the ideal new space as having room for one attorney and a support staff member, parking, a waiting area, and preferably a breakroom or shared kitchen space.

Letters of interest to provide new office space are due August 29. The department says it will recruit for the position once it makes a decision on space.
