So long, Ms. Cindy

Caitlin Tan KDLG

After 15 years of involvement with the Dillingham Elementary School, Secretary Registrar Cindy Snyder is retiring.

Miss Cindy, as her students like to call her, is the first face one sees walking into the Dillingham Elementary School.

Cindy Snyder worked as a teacher's aid at the school in 1994 to 1995. She later accepted to her current position as secretary registrar in 2005.

"I bandage boo-boos and I fix glasses and I fix jewelry and I've actually pulled a couple teeth," said Snyder.

After wearing many hats in her position, she is retiring to leave for Washington State with her husband, where he will be attending college. She said she hopes to continue her work in education down south.

Wednesday was the last day of school for students, and Snyder was still fulfilling her many roles. One student came for his inhaler, and she attentively rolled her chair over to help him.

"I hang onto all the mediations and when students need their inhalers I have another folder like that for the Epi-Pens," said Snyder.

Being a school nurse is just part of the job, she added.

Nick Schollmeier, Dillingham Elementary School principal, started his position three years ago. He said Snyder helped show him the ropes.

"I don't know if we will ever find another Miss Cindy," he said. "Without her the school doesn't run nearly as smooth."

Librarian Laurie Miller said Snyder is someone staff, students and parents can talk to, as she's always laughing and making school fun.

"She really is the glue that holds the school together," she said. "She's a nurse, she's the manager, she keeps everyone in line, she works in the kitchen sometimes when they need extra help."

Miller even said she wished Snyder would stay.

Snyder added she will miss the small town charm of Dillingham when she leaves. With the recent graduation, it was an interestingly fitting year for her to leave.

"The seniors that just graduated, that was my first year of kindergartners and I can still see them as five-year-olds not nineteen-year-olds," Snyder said.

Wednesday was the last day of school for students, but Snyder will work through June 9.
