Basketball regions in Dillingham this weekend

This year’s high school basketball regional tournament kicks off Wednesday evening in Dillingham.

Competition at this year’s regions will be stiff, according to Dillingham High School Activities Director Mike Larson.

“There are a lot of teams that are quite equal in talent. So some of the games are just going to be real dog fights,” said Larson.

He says that all the teams have spent the season preparing for this tournament but things now will just have to be decided on the courts.

“Unalaska boys were here a couple weeks ago and both of those games when down to the final possessions," said Larson. "We’re going to have more of the same and we’ll have plenty of that on the girl’s side of the bracket.”

Dillingham girls are the defending state champs and the boys made it to the state championship game last year but came up short. It’s only every four years that Dillingham gets to host the regional tournament. Larson hopes to see the fans turn out for the opportunity.

“We’d love to have some rockin’ crowds here and fill this gym up and support these wolverine teams and the other teams that are coming from around the region.," said Larson. "This is a big deal for us."

Four girls’ teams and five boy’s teams will be facing off on the courts. There is one more boys’ team because the Kuskokwim Learning Academy in Bethel is joining for the first time this year.

The games start Wednesday night. KDLG will post a schedule of the games that will air on AM 670 at our website KDLG.org.
