Rain causes delays for Squaw Creek culvert work

DOT spokesperson says to expect a one-day closure Saturday, and the culvert work to install the pipe next Thursday.

DILLINGHAM: The culvert work at Squaw Creek scheduled to begin Wednesday afternoon may now be delayed for a week on account of recent area rain.

Jill Reese, a Department of Transportation spokesperson, provided an update Thursday afternoon. She says there was more water in the creek than had been planned for, and now the first closure isn’t planned until the weekend:

"They're going to close the road Saturday morning to put in some additional pipes to get Squaw Creek Water diverted sufficiently, and then hopefully they'll open the road Saturday evening," said Reese.

While the road is closed Saturday, the official detour route will remain the same, using Waskey Road to connect to and from downtown Dillingham.

The actual culvert work at Squaw Creek to install the stream pipe may not begin until late next week:

"As long as everything is going well, then they should be able to close the road again by Thursday and get the work started in earnest."

Again, the first closure at Dillingham’s Airport "Y" is not expected until Saturday morning. DOT says that should be a day-long closure to put more pipes in order to drain Squaw Creek.
