Quinhagak man found stranded after Wednesday search and rescue

Michael Matthew, 21, was hypothermic after searchers found him on the beach about 8 miles from the village, say troopers.

KDLG: A daylong earch and rescue effort outside Quinhagak ended well Wednesday evening.

Around 7:30 Wednesday morning, Michael Matthew, 21, apparently walked away from his home, wet and without good clothing for the cold weather.

Searchers were unable to find any clues of Matthew's whereabouts until about 8:00 p.m., when they saw a flare discharged some 8 miles from the village along the beach.

A half hour later the search party found Matthew on the opposite side of a river and separated by the tide.  Troopers say the searchers were able to navigate the open water and pick him up.

Matthew was reported to be hypothermic and was taken to the clinic.
