Processing association expands to Anchorage

Seafood processing group expands to Anchorage, plans rural outreach.

The trade group that represents several Bristol Bay processors including Trident, Peter Pan, Alaska General and North Pacific is expanding its work in Anchorage

President Glenn Reed said the organization has hired Nicole Kimball, a current Fish and Game employee, to staff it's new Anchorage office. She'll help the group with rural outreach, something she did for the North Pacific Fishery Management Council in the past.

“That’s an area we’d like to get involved in a little bit in western Alaska, and with her background we felt like that was a really good fit for us," he said.

Reed said Kimball will also help with other issues after she gets started in mid-March.

"The things that we tend to do, for most of our effort, has to do with legislative and regulatory issues, and Nicole will be involved in those as well," Reed said. "I think her roles and responsibilities are going to be broad-based, Anchorage is a new location for us, so we’ll be looking for perhaps some new opportunities in addition to the ones I’ve just outlined.”

Kimball currently works for the state of Alaska as Fish and Game’s federal fisheries coordinator. In that job, she serves as Commissioner Sam Cotten’s alternate on the North Pacific Fishery Management Council. Although she’ll initially take a break from the council, Reed said she’ll eventually help the organization navigate issues there, too.

In addition to its work on regulatory issues, PSPA is the entity that holds the Marine Stewardship Council’s sustainability certification for Alaska salmon on behalf of many Alaska processors.
