Manokotak man arrested for alleged rape at Dillingham Hotel

Andrew Evon, 49, faces 30-99 years in jail if convicted of the first degree sexual assault of a woman on June 9.

KDLG:  Andrew J. Evon, 49, of Manokotak was arrested by Dillingham Police Tuesday for the alleged rape of a woman at the Dillingham Hotel on June 9.

The victim reported waking up in her bed at the hotel to find an inebriated Evon assaulting her. She told police she was held down and raped for a half hour before she was able to fight Evon off of her and call 911.

Police say Evon was in the room when they arrived, heavily intoxicated and uncooperative. He was detained and taken to the police station while police obtained a warrant to collect physical evidence.

The victim was taken to the Kanakanak Hosptial for an exam, and police say the doctor confirmed trauma consistent with the alleged rape and physical assault.

According to police, Evon was later released as per the instructions of an on-call assistant district attorney. He was arrested the following Tuesday and appeared in court Wednesday.

At his arraignment on a first degree sexual assault charge, Evon used headphones to hear the judge and appeared confused.

"I'm surprised by this ... I really am surprised," he said.

Based on a prior felony conviction, Evon faces a presumptive minimum jail sentence of 30 years, and up to 99, if convicted on the unclassified felony rape charge.

He asked Judge Pat Douglass if he could discuss the charge and case, but she advised against it. The district attorney asked that Evon be held on $30,000 bail, but Douglass raised it to $50,000. He was assigned a public defense attorney.
