Manokotak fire leaves elder homeless

A GoFundMe account has been established to help raise money for Nellie Paul, whose home burned Sunday.

KDLG: A fire in Manokotak Sunday night destroyed the home of elder Nellie Paul, but everyone made it out of the home with only minor injuries.

The fire started around 9 p.m. Sunday, and a number of community members pitched in to help fight the blaze. It took until 5 a.m. the following morning to see the fire fully extinguished, according to the village public safety officer.

Damages from the fire were estimated at more than $20,000.  An exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but some wiring in the kitchen may to be blame.

One community member told KDLG News Monday that the children who lived in the home were all in school Monday morning, adding that several in the community were helping wash the clothes that were saved.

A GoFundMe accounthas been set up to seek donations for Nellie Paul to help rebuild the home, with more than $1400 pledged by Tuesday morning.
