Man arrested in Chignik Bay for sexual abuse of young girl

A Chignik Bay man is under arrest for the alleged sexual abuse of a young girl last week. KDLG’s Dave Bendinger has more:

KDLG:  Caylen Kalmakoff, 21, was arrested Saturday in Chignik Bay after a week-long investigation by state troopers into an allegation he sexually abused a 6-year-old girl. The victim's grandparents called troopers on June 8, after she reported the incident and complained of pain consistent with sexual abuse.

The young girl and her grandmother were flown to the Kanakanak Hospital in Dillingham. A medical exam showed physical trauma, and the girl described the sex during an interview at the Child Advocacy Center.

Kalmakoff was described as a "friend of the family," who had moved away from Chignik Bay but returned for the fishing season. The victim said she and Kalmakoff had been alone in another house when he abused her, and, according to troopers, she said it was not the first time he had done so.

Granted a warrant, troopers electronically monitored and recorded a conversation between the victim's grandmother and Kalmakoff. In the affidavit, troopers say Kalmakoff admitted to the one incident of recent abuse during that call, but asked to keep that admission just between he and the victim's grandmother.

He was arrested Saturday and arraigned Sunday in Dillingham on an unclassified felony charge of first degree sexual abuse of a minor. Judge Pat Douglass set bail at $25,000. Kalmakoff faces a presumptive sentence range of 25 to 35 years in jail, and up to 99, if convicted.
