Leads, but no suspects yet in Sunday vehicle theft

KDLG

Stolen Toyota Corolla found rolled on Waskey Road after it was stolen late Saturday or early Sunday. A Dillingham police vehicle also rolled while looking for it.

DILLINGHAM: A D&J Rentals Toyota Corolla was stolen from near Stelling's Automotive on Wood River Road Saturday night. It was later found wrecked off Waskey Road.

Dillingham police officer Bill Yates was looking for that vehicle Sunday morning at dawn when he rolled his DPD vehicle on Wood River Road. A photo taken that morning was spread quickly on social media, including on a Facebook page called "Alaska's Worst Drivers."

Chief Dan Pasquariello confirmed Monday morning that Yates was not injured, and the vehicle sustained only minor damage. Loose gravel on the shoulder was to blame for the slow speed tip, said Pasquariello.

KDLG News spoke with D&J Rentals, owners of the Toyota Corolla, who said this is not the first time a vehicle has been stolen. The Corolla was covered with liability insurance.

Police spent the day tracking down witnesses, but have not named a suspect.
