Kokhanok Woman Found Dead in Jail Cell

DILLINGHAM:  Amanda Kernak, 24, of Kokhanok, was found unresponsive in her room at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center during a routine security check on April 10.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigations Major Crimes Unit was notified at 1:35 a.m.. Authorities said lifesaving efforts were attempted without success, and Kernak was later pronounced deceased. No foul play is suspected, and next of kin have been notified.

Kernak appears to have been in custody following a April 7 arrest for driving under the influence in Anchorage. A defendant is supposed to be arraigned within 24 hours of his or her arrest, with terms of bail set at that time. It does not appear that Kernak was arraigned before she was found dead on April 10.

KDLG News has requested copies of the police and court records.
