A world-traveling basketball camp has made its way to Dillingham this week.
Sounds of basketballs fill the gym at Dillingham high school. It might be kind of early for basketball season, but not for the students and coaches from Hoops for Hope. Coach Micheal Eddy says using sports is a good way to get the message of the camp across.
"We've just found that basketball is one of those great games that teaches you life skills you can take with you for the rest of your life. We're doing that here in Alaska and throughout the world."
The Hoops for Hope basketball camp travels from Texas. It focuses on what they call The Four P's.
"We talk about having a part, a plan, a place and a purpose. We really try to impart those at the end of each day. We believe that working with kids for three hours, the last 15-20 minutes, we've earned the right to speak to them about the message of hope that we bring," Eddy says.
Hoops for Hope has made multiple stops around the world. After Dillingham, they will go to Ghana, Africa. The Dillingham camp is open until Thursday, July 21st to kids up to age 12 from 10 am to 1pm, and for kids age 12 and up 2 pm-5pm. There is no cost for those who wish to participate.
