Fire Saturday at Dillingham Landfill

A "controlled burn" at the scrap metal pile spread out of control Saturday afternoon.

DILLINGHAM:  On Saturday afternoon, the Dillingham Volunteer Fire Dept. was called out to the city landfill  when a controlled burn in the scrap metal pile spread out of control.

For the better part of the day, an ominous billow of dark smoke was visible from town.

In order to prevent the fire from spreading to other piles of rubbish or tires, firefighters used heavy equipment to cut a fire line through the scrap metal, then sprayed the fire down with thousands of gallons of water.

The fire was controlled and mostly extinguished by Saturday evening, and there were no reports of injuries or damage.
