Extensive search underway for missing hiker in Nome

Joseph Baleras, 36, has not been seen since he parked his truck at mile 44 on the Nome Highway to hike and mountain run this weekend.

KDLG: State authorities said Tuesday that the search is continuing for a missing man outside of Nome.

Joseph Balderas, 36, parked his truck at mile 44 of the Nome-Council Highway over the weekend to go hiking and mountain running. A missing person report was called in Monday morning, and state troopers triggered a search effort.

On Monday, a state super cub aircraft, a private helicopter, and volunteers on ATVs scoured the area, turning up no clues of Balderas’ whereabouts.

The same assets are searching the area Tuesday, and have added a US Coast Guard H-60 helicopter that was nearby on a training mission.
