Dillingham octagenarians spend tide stuck on Nushagak sandbar

On a Sunday evening search, troopers found a skiff, elderly couple from Dillingham overdue on a trip to New Stuyahok.

DILLINGHAM: An elderly couple are apparently fine after going overdue on a weekend trip up the Nushagak River. Wassillie and Lena Kapotak, both in their 80s, headed by skiff from Dillingham towards New Stuyahok on Sunday afternoon, but did not arrive on time and could not be reached by VHF.

They were reported as overdue to state troopers at 9:30 pm Sunday, and troopers flew the river Sunday night to look for them.

Troopers say the boat was located stuck on a sandbar about six miles south of Portage Creek, and the couple had to wait for high tide to lift them off.

The Kapotaks eventually made it to Portage Creek and were in reported in fine health.
