Dillingham and Nondalton youth will benefit from grants meant to facilitate gardening and local food projects this summer.

Summer programs in Dillingham and Nondalton will benefit from state Division of Agriculture grants for Farm to School projects.

Several local organizations are working together on Dillingham’s summer culture camp, and coordinator Deanna Baier said the grant will be used for one of the activities she’s planning - a strawberry garden.

“We are planning to start a strawberry garden down here at the tribal building," she said. "...So the kids will be involved in building planters, mixing up the soil, planting the starters and maintaining the strawberries all summer.”

The grant program is meant to encourage gardening projects, and the use of local foods in meals, and facilitate other aspects of nutrition education. Around the state, 10 other organizations also received the grants. A second round of grants will be given out for this summer; applications are due April 22.
