On September 10th, Dillingham’s City Council awarded contracts and gave updates on ongoing projects at a regular monthly meeting.
The council approved a contract to purchase fuel and gasoline from Bristol Alliance Fuels for October 2015 through October 2016. Dillingham City Manager Rose Loera says the new contract brings a cost savings of about $146,000 compared to last year's fuel and gas prices.
"We went with the lowest bidder, which was Bristol Alliance, at $2.50 a gallon for No. 1 diesel, $2.75 for No. 2 diesel and $2.95 for gasoline," said Loera. "Last year it was $4.19 for diesel and unleaded gas for $4.21, and that was with Vitus."
With the lower prices, Loera says the city will save money on fuel even with an additional 35,000 gallons of diesel used by the new incinerator this year.
Another contract was awarded to Elite Mechanical to replace the main lift station at the city dock.
Loera says work is nearly finished on the sea wall between the city dock and Snag Point, which is being repaired and reinforced between to prevent further erosion.
"They put rip-rap all along the front of it and they're about 3/4 of the way through the sheet-metal piling," said Loera.
She says work on the sea wall should be done, and the area passable, within a few weeks.
Finally, the Council discussed plans for the section of the boat harbor formerly owned by James Bingman Sr, which became City property this summer. Loera says they have already moved some old cars off the property, and they hope to enlist some youthful energy to get the area cleaned up.
"We're gonna see if we can get the wrestlers to help us with getting garbage out of there first, and then from there we'll look at a possible sale of some of the items there," said Loera.
The Council plans to put out a request for bids this fall to remove the scrap metal on the property.
