Bristol Bay Fisheries Report: July 8, 2017

Sarah Grace Durrance

Good catches posted all over the Bay with another 2 million harvested Friday. Naknek-Kvichak gets more fishing time Saturday, and Ugashik is finally seeing some good numbers. The total run is over 29 million, and the boats are heading east for the finale.

Catch this program nightly at 6 p.m., 10 p.m., and 2 a.m. on AM 670, and online at KDLG.org. (With early broadcasts Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.)

The Bay's fishermen put another 2.1 million sockeye on the books Friday, pushing the total harvest to 18.2 million (out of a forecast of 27.5 million). The Kvichak River is showing some signs of life, and there were decent catches posted Friday at the Port Moller Test Fishery, including 61 at station 8. Sockeye bound for Ugashik are finally showing up in the counts, with a total harvest now at 1.1 million and 284,000 counted as escapement, halfway to the lower end of the goal. And the Nushagak has eclipsed all but one other total run on record ... another two million fish will put her over the top. Today, Odie II skipper Lange Solberg gives perspective from the Naknek Kvichak drift fleet, which is growing quickly ahead of an anticipated 10 million more fish. Andy Straley talks about Alaska Best Seafoods, which is packing away a couple ten thousand pounds a day of high quality fish, operating from a new facility at Ekuk Beach. And KDLG's Allison Mollenkamp explores the lagging king run from the sport industry side.

Karyn Marxmiller was pressed into service when the season took off faster than normal. She fished with her husband and son who set net on the Lower Combine in the Nush.

Catch this program nightly at 6 p.m., 10 p.m., and 2 a.m. on AM 670, and online at KDLG.org. (With early broadcasts Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.)
