The Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association was founded in 2005. Funded through a one percent tax on the harvest of all drift permit fishermen in the Bay, the Association has worked to advance the quality and marketability of Bristol Bay salmon, has funded annual research and fishery related projects in the Bay, and has advocated on behalf of the fishery’s protection and sustainability.
Founding member Robert Heyano of Dillingham stepped down from his post as President of the Board.
Fabrication Laboratories are making their way into rural Alaska. A fab lab is a small-scale workshop that allows for digital fabrication. They can be used to design and build all sorts of objects or machinery instead of relying on mass produced products, and they’re tied to a network of other fab labs all around the world.
There is a fab lab at the Bristol Bay campus in Dillingham, and the village of Togiak recently set up one too. This week students are training on the fancy technology at a workshop in Dillingham. KDLG’s Matt Martin went to find out more.
The high school basketball season wrapped up last week, and this year no Bristol Bay teams came home with a state title. The Dillingham boys team came within three points and five seconds of bringing home their first title in a thrilling championship match against Glenallen.
The Wolverines had several outstanding contributors this year, but one consistently stood out above the rest. With his lightning fast speed and laser fast shooting and passing, senior captain Kenneth Savo dominated on the court game after game. He was named all-tourney time and again, may be the best three point shooter in the state, and scored the most points and had the most assists in the 2A tournament. Savo also was a state champ in the 126 pound weight class in the 1-2-3A wrestling tournament.
This week was the annual career fair for students, with events in Naknek and Dillingham. The career fair was sponsored by BBEDC, BBNA, BBNC, UAF Bristol Bay Campus, Southwest Region Schools, Dillingham City Schools, and the Bristol Bay Borough School. KDLG’s Hannah Colton was alongside students in Dillingham as they connected with different employment and educational opportunities.
If there was ever a time this winter to put boats away … it seems that time has passed, and now it’s time to get them back out. The rivers and lakes are opening quick, and the spring bird hunting season kicks off next week.
Our friend Gabe Dunham, the Marine Advisory Program agent in Bristol Bay and frequent guest on this program, has agreed to talk us through some basic boat maintenance in what will be a three part series. Gabe grew up in Southeast Alaska and has about 15 years of marine mechanic experience before changing careers … he also has been teaching the occasional and well-attended outboard motor maintenance and repair classes at the Bristol Bay campus. Today he joins me for part one on how to assemble the right took kit boaters might want to have onboard at all times.
