21,594 tons harvested before Togiak herring fishery closed Monday

Seiners caught their season quota before hauling in their nets, but the small gillnet fleet did not.

KDLG:  The Togiak herring fishery wrapped up Monday at 12:00 p.m. The Department of Fish and Game made the call Monday morning, noting that the purse seine fleet was near its quota and the gillnet boats had apparently given up the effort over the weekend. KDLG’s Dave Bendinger has more:

ADF&G released final harvest tallies Tuesday morning. The purse seine fleet caught a total of 20,374 tons, which was 65 tons past the allowable quota for the seiners (20,309). Fish and Game noted that total season harvest includes an estimated 500 tons attributed to deadloss spotted on the grounds last week.

Only six gillnet boats fished this season, and combined they harvested 1,220 tons, just 14 percent of the 8,704 ton harvest allocation.

How many herring is that, by the way? Based on the average weight recorded in the daily catches, those 21,594 tons equal 47,092,482 fish. (give or take)

(Any word on price?)
