We are very excited to announce that KDLG has received a $28,890.00 Grant from the Alaska Public Broadcasting, Inc. to help in the cost of replacing the roof and siding of our transmitter building.  In addition, we will be able to replace our current manual transfer switch in our studio generator building to an automatic one as well as install a more adequate ventilation system.

After more than 32 years of life in the extreme conditions of our area, the transmitter building has developed several leaks that have threatened the safe operation of our equipment.   One incident in particular motivated us to seek funds for these repairs, you might remember back in March, Bristol Bay received heavy snowfall followed by rain causing water to leak in around the roof vent which is directly located above our brand new Nautel Digital transmitter, this leak caused an electrical arc that blew two fuses in our 3 phase power thus knocking us off the air for around 24 hours.

Currently the problem with our generator next to the studio is the manual transfer switch system.  When the electricity goes out, our engineer has to go to the generator building, startup the generator and manually switch between the local power company and the generator.  This process can sometimes take up to 30 minutes and in case of emergencies prevent us from getting out vital information to the our listeners.  With a new automatic transfer switch, this process will be eliminated and off airtime will be less than a minute.  Also, a ventilating system will be installed to eliminate us from having to leave the door opened, unlocked, and exposed.

KDLG plans to cover 10% of associated costs with these projects.  Funds for KDLG’s contribution to these projects are already available through locally raised money.  KDLG would like to thank all our members; your donations allow us to complete necessary projects such as these and help us maintain our important service to the listening communities.
