At a first felony appearance before the magistrate at the Dillingham courthouse Wednesday morning, Leroy B. Dick, Jr, 42, of Manokotak, initially refused legal counsel, telling the judge: "To be honest, I could say I'm guilty of the crime."

Dick is accused of killing VPSO Thomas Madole, 54, Tuesday afternoon in Manokotak.  The State of Alaska is charging Dick with murder in the first degree, which carries a maximum sentence of 99 years in prison.

A Village Public Safety Officer has been shot and killed in the community of Manokotak, about 25 miles southwest of Dillingham.

The retail company Orvis, which specializes in fly-fishing equipment and apparel, is pledging big money in the fight against the Pebble Mine. Orvis has stated a goal of raising $100,000 this year for Trout Unlimited and the "Stop Pebble Mine" campaign, citing the proposed mine's potential environmental hazards.  KDLG's Dave Bendinger has more:

Partnering with Trout Unlimited, Orvis has pledged to match customer donations to it's "Stop Pebble Mine" campaign, up to $50,000.  That makes it the Vermont-based company's top conservation effort this year.

The Alaska Dept. of Transportation had intended to put the Wood River bridge project out to bid in January, with hopes to break ground by July. Now, DOT says that'll be pushed back a year.

According to a preliminary report released by the National Transportation Safety Board, the ACE Air Cargo Flight 51 was operating on an instrument flight rules (IFR) plan when it crashed into "rising terrain" in the Muklung Hills during poor weather on Friday, March 8th.  The Beechcraft 1900C dropped off radar at 8:14 a.m. Pilot Jeff Day, 38, and co-pilot Neil Jensen, 21, were both killed in the crash.

Triathlete Damian Hill, 29, originally of Naknek, AK, is gearing up for another competitive season in the professional circuit.

On Sunday, March 3, Hill, now of Portland, traveled to Lincoln City, OR, for the fifth annual Half-Marathon at Elks Wapiti Park. Posting a time of 1:18:30, Hill beat his nearest competition by almost four minutes. Jason Hawthorne, 43, another serious triathlete, was last year's Half-Marathon winner, this year finishing second with a time of 1:22:21.

On Wednesday, March 6, Tom Marsik and Kristin Donaldson of Dillingham had their home on Gauthier Way tested for air tightness. A conventional blower door test was used, which is common practice for energy audits. But Wednesday's was no ordinary test; it was actually an attempt to secure an official world record for "Tightest Residential Building."

Over the weekend, federal investigators were at the crash site of the ACE Air Cargo plane that went down in the Muklung Hills Friday morning, killing the pilot and co-pilot.

A plane crashed Friday morning in the Muklung Hills, roughly 20 miles northeast of Dillingham, but by 6pm Friday, authorities had not been able to reach the crash site.

An attempt was made Wednesday in Dillingham to set a new world record.  Husband and wife Tom Marsik and Kristin Donaldson believe they have built the most airtight house on the planet, and KDLG's Dave Bendinger stopped by as they prepared to test that theory.

Marie Matsuno Nash, 70, originally of Ugashik, was inducted along with 14 others to the Alaska Women's Hall of Fame during a ceremony on February 28th . Since 2009, the Alaska Women's Hall of Fame has been honoring women whose life contributions have helped shape the state through its history, including Elizabeth Peratrovich, Mary Louise Rasmuson, Sarah Palin, Lisa Murkowski. Nash's induction was a recognition of her achievements advocating for human rights during more than four decades working around state and federal government.

The Western Alaska Alcohol and Narcotics Team intercepted a shipment of oxycodone pills destined for Dillingham late last week. The 100 pills seized carry a local street value of about $20,000.  Jose and Jerilyn Sanchez have been arrested; authorities say the couple was targeting the Beaver Round-Up festivities to distribute the dangerous narcotics.  KDLG's Dave Bendinger reports.
