Staff members with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game are expected to head up the Nushagak River Tuesday to set up the sonar counting site near Portage Creek. The sonar will first be used to count king salmon. KDLG’s Mike Mason filed this preview of the impending king run to the Nushagak River.

That Alaska Board of Fisheries made several changes to commercial fishing regulations during the December meeting focused on Bristol Bay. One of the changes could result in fishermen in the Nushagak District being forced to change their gear at some point during the season. KDLG’s Mike Mason has the story.

Herring Update... Kuskokwim Area

Alaska’s largest herring fishery came to a close on Tuesday. Fish and Game confirms that all of the seafood processors involved with the Togiak Sac Roe herring fishery quit buying on Monday.

The staking period for a shore fishery lease from the State of Alaska is now open through the middle of October. The application period is also open through mid-October. KDLG’s Mike Mason has more.

NOAA says when discrepancies appear in different versions of tide books, trust their website for the most accurate, up-to-date predictions of tides.

Injured fisherman can now receive up to 10 thousand dollars to cover emergency healthcare costs through the state’s Alaska Fishermen's Fund.

The legislature boosted the maximum benefit in 2010 from $2,50o to $10,000. Velma Thomas with the Alaska Department of Labor says many fishermen have not learned about the changes in the program or how to take advantage of it.

Seafood processors feeling a labor crunch from the loss of J1 student workers will be keeping an eye on Congress this summer. The Senate will soon take up legislation that creates a visa category specifically for the fish processing industry. Senator Mark Begich is leading the push to create the H2O visa.  Senators will discuss the visa in a much bigger debate: that of broad immigration reform.  Begich said the senate will begin on the issue around the second week of June.

28,808 tons of fish were hauled in, the highest total harvest in some 20 years, with both gear groups catching over 90% of their quotas.

New workers this summer at the Goodnews Bay processing plant in Platinum will earn what’s believed to the highest starting processing wage in the state.  Coastal Villages Seafood will pay 10 dollars an hour for new employees. That’s up from 9 dollar an hour new workers have started at over the past 4 years. In boosting the wages, the company points to success in the CDQ’s Bering Sea catch as well as local improvements in processing efficiency. Dawson Hoover is the Communications Coordinator for Coastal Villages Regional Fund. 

The ongoing Togiak Sac-Roe herring fishery is down to just one gear group but as KDLG’s Mike Mason reports… the gillnetters had a good day of fishing on Wednesday.

A women involved in the seafood processing industry is trying to shed some light on why one area of Bristol Bay has a thriving small seafood processing industry while another area has no small processors at all. KDLG’s Mike Mason has the story.

Fire Aboard the Catcher Processor "Arctic Storm"

The fire that broke out Monday afternoon aboard a large catcher processor is out and no injuries have been reported. The Arctic Storm is a 334-foot catcher processor that works extensively in the North Pacific including the massive Pollock fishery in the Bering Sea.
