Bristol Bay stakeholders respond to EPA suspending its withdrawal of proposed mining restrictions

Opponents of mining in the Bristol Bay watershed celebrate Administrator Scott Pruitt’s announcement and are committed to remaining vocal on the issue. On the other hand, four village corporations with land near or adjacent to the Pebble deposit have called on Pruitt to “ensure a full and fair review for the project” and are concerned that proposed restrictions could impede that process.

Sled dog races are held annually in small villages across the state. In the Bristol Bay region there are annual races in places like New Stuyahok and Koliaganek but the most prestigious race is held in Dillingham.      KDLG's Mike Mason covered this year's race and filed this story.

Alaska’s Izembek National Wildlife Refuge is a 315,000-acre stretch of eelgrass and tundra pockmarked with lakes and lagoons, a site where the geese called Pacific black brants stop off to feed before they begin their journey to wintering grounds in Mexico. But the fate of this remote wilderness area has become a critical bargaining chip in an inside-the-Beltway battle, with Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) threatening to block Sally Jewell’s nomination as interior secretary unless the Obama administration agrees to put a road through it.

The Iditarod may be the most closely watched sled dog race on earth but in the Bristol Bay region the most prestigious race is the annual "Western Alaska Sled Dog Championship" that was held over the weekend. KDLG's Mike Mason called the race and filed this report.

With spring increasingly near at-hand, it's safe to say that this winter has been a little different than years past. After a rainy December and January, the snow certainly, and finally, arrived. But something else many have noticed is smaller number of ptarmigan in usual spots around the area. KDLG News put student reporters August Shade and Connor Ito on the hunt to find out where these birds may be, and if they're going to yet arrive. They filed this report:
